Here are some frames from an adaptive 3d simulation of an explosion in a room with seven barrels. The picture at the right shows an isometric view of the geometry (the black lines show not the walls of the room but the bounding box of the barrels). Click on it for a higher resolution image. The plots below show density (red is high, blue is low). In each image, the top picture is at the floor of the room, and the other two are cross-sectional slices thru the center. The room is wider than it is tall, so the slice plots are not square. The initial condition (not shown) is a quiescent gas with a sphere of density 10 times ambient and a pressure 100 times. There are two levels of a factor of two refinement each. The outlines of the refined grids are visible in the plots below (just barely; look at the high resolution plots). The first level grids are outlined in black, the second level in yellow. In the last three plots, the level 1 grid covers the entire domain. In the last plot, the level 2 grid also covers the entire domain. The base grid (level 0) is 24 by 24 by 12 cells.

There is also a movie in MPEG format (2.4Mb) of this simulation.
